Athens Marathon, often celebrated as the "Mother of Marathons," holds a deep historical and cultural significance. In fact, the race concludes at the iconic Panathinaikon Stadium, a breathtaking U-shaped marble reconstruction of an ancient arena, famously the venue of the inaugural modern Olympic Games.
Adding to its uniqueness, a cherished tradition enhances the experience each year: every finisher receives a medal featuring a letter from the word "MARATHON." This year, the medal showcases the letter "T." Over eight years, the collection of medals will spell out the entire word, creating a meaningful keepsake for those who complete the race annually.
Furthermore, bringing a creative flair, a new artist is selected each year to design the back side of the medal. For instance, in 2024, the renowned Mr. Kostas Tsoclis contributed a sketch of an olive branch, symbolising peace and victory.
As shown in the accompanying photo, the medal incorporates
two basic colours: antique gold and shiny silver. This thoughtful combination beautifully highlights the Panathinaikon Stadium, emphasising its timeless elegance and the marathon's enduring legacy.
